cursor: all-scroll in CSS: pan in any direction

all-scroll says the content can be scrolled or panned in any direction. It is the CSS cousin of the middle-click autoscroll cursor.

cursor: all-scroll; Move your mouse over this box Cursors only appear with a mouse or trackpad. Open this page on a computer to see this one.
This is the cursor your browser and system draw for all-scroll.

What it shows

Usually a dot with four small arrows around it. In practice Chrome shows the same cursor as move on every platform, and Firefox on Windows shows the four-headed Move arrow (the SizeAll role, aero_move.cur).

Usage

When to use it

Use it for

  • Areas that pan in both directions when dragged: large diagrams, floor plans, zoomed-in image viewers.
  • A middle-click panning mode you build yourself in a web app.
  • Minimaps, where dragging the viewport frame scrolls the main view.

Avoid it for

  • Maps and canvases where people expect a hand. grab and grabbing are more familiar.
  • Ordinary scrolling containers. Scrollbars, wheels and trackpads already do the job with the default cursor.

Code

Copy the snippet

CSS
.diagram-viewport { cursor: all-scroll; }
HTML
<div class="diagram-viewport">Drag to pan the floor plan</div>

Watch out

Gotchas

  • Chrome maps all-scroll to the same cursor as move, and Firefox does the same on Windows, so many visitors cannot tell them apart.
  • MDN's data marks all-scroll as unsupported on iPad, which falls back to the round default pointer.

FAQ

Questions

What is the difference between all-scroll and move?
all-scroll means the view scrolls; move means the object moves. They often look identical, so choose the one that matches what your code does.
Is all-scroll the middle-click scroll cursor?
It is the closest CSS keyword. The browser's own autoscroll cursor is drawn by the browser and you cannot style it.
Should I use all-scroll for a map?
Most people expect the open hand on maps. Use grab, then grabbing while the button is down.
